What is NiCd Battery?
A Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes. These batteries are known for their reliability, long cycle life, and ability to deliver high discharge currents.
The basic construction of a Ni-Cd battery includes:
1.Positive Electrode (Cathode): Made of nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH), which acts as the positive terminal during discharge. The nickel oxide hydroxide undergoes reduction during discharge, releasing electrons.
2.Negative Electrode (Anode): Comprised of metallic cadmium (Cd), which serves as the negative terminal during discharge. The cadmium metal reacts with hydroxide ions from the electrolyte during discharge, forming cadmium hydroxide and releasing electrons.
3.Separator: A permeable membrane placed between the positive and negative electrodes to prevent short circuits while allowing the flow of ions between the electrodes during charging and discharging.
4.Electrolyte: Typically a potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution, which facilitates the flow of ions between the electrodes during charge and discharge cycles.
During charging, an external electrical current is applied to the battery, causing nickel oxide hydroxide to be oxidized back to its original state and metallic cadmium to be deposited on the negative electrode. This process is reversible, allowing Ni-Cd batteries to be recharged and reused multiple times.
Ni-Cd batteries have been widely used in various applications such as portable electronics, power tools, emergency lighting, and aviation due to their reliability, robustness, and ability to deliver high discharge currents.
Advantages of Ni-Cd battery:
1.High energy density: Ni-Cd batteries have a high energy density, meaning they can store a large amount of energy in a small volume.
2.Long cycle life: Ni-Cd batteries have a long cycle life and can be recharged and discharged many times without significantly degrading their performance.
3.High discharge rate: Ni-Cd batteries can deliver high currents quickly and are well-suited for use in high-drain applications.
4.Wide temperature range: Ni-Cd batteries can operate over a wide range of temperatures, from -20°C to 50°C, making them suitable for use in harsh environments.
5.Low self-discharge rate: Ni-Cd batteries have a low self-discharge rate, meaning they can hold their charge for a long time without needing to be recharged.
6.Low cost: Ni-Cd batteries are relatively inexpensive to produce and are widely available.
Overall, Ni-Cd batteries are a reliable and cost-effective choice for many applications, particularly where high power and long cycle life are required.
